Sam (Naomi Watts) and her family live in Australia and fulfill a big dream by traveling to Thailand together. But this turns into a nightmare when Sam falls from the roof of a house and injures herself badly. From then on, she is paralyzed from the thoracic vertebrae down. The passionate surfer and mother of three falls into a deep emotional hole and loses her courage to face life, even though her husband Cameron (Andrew Lincoln) looks after her devotedly. In addition, her son Noah (Griffin Murray-Johnston) withdraws completely. He is plagued by feelings of guilt, as he was the one who took Sam to the roof terrace in Thailand to show her the view. One day, Noah finds an injured bird on the beach and takes it home. The Australian magpie has a broken wing. Noah nurses the animal back to health and asks his mother to look after "Penguin", as he calls the magpie, while he is at school. Sam is extremely reluctant to do this, but over time little Penguin is able to revive Sam's courage to face life.
