Plight unfolds in an alternate near-future that's been torn apart by a civil war between the Remnants and the Resistance. In this dangerous new reality those deemed "weak", such as the disabled and the neurodivergent, have been cast aside and forced to fend for themselves on the fringes of society. It is here we meet our protagonists, Peter, James, Bart, and Russell - four remarkable young men, each with varying degrees of autism - who for the past five years have been under the loving care of their protector, Connie, in a remote farmhouse. When Connie falls ill, the boys must venture together into the unknown on a perilous quest for medicine and supplies in the distant town of New Haven. As they traverse the harsh desert environment, the boys' unity is often tested by quarrels over survival tactics, the mysterious disappearance of essential items, and encounters with aggressive scavengers; however, they also bond over shared dreams and desires. When they finally arrive in New Haven, the boys find little more than a ghost town and must accept the help of Connie's sister, Ronnie, to find light in the darkness as they forge a new future for themselves.
