Court illustrator Emma Rivera, recently given up on the online dating scene in having been stood up on her last "first" date and thus is resigned to being single, receives a telephone call from her "lone wolf" penguin researcher father Ian Rivera from Antarctica where he is currently stationed. With the line cutting in and out before it goes dead, all Emma hears are words that suggest, in addition to the fact that he has recently complained of chest pains which he never had diagnosed, that he is in medical distress. Unable to reconnect with him, Emma feels the need to get down to his base in Antarctica as quickly as she can to help him. The only way she finds to get to the continent is on a cruise ship disembarking from Buenos Aires, but she has to get around the dogged chief ship's officer Ingrid who will not allow her on board without the proper documentation, which Emma is unable to obtain expeditiously if she is able to get it at all. Beyond getting to Antarctica, Emma would also have to make her way from wherever the ship anchors to Ian's base. Along her journey, Emma meets sub-zero mechanical engineer Andy Jackson who too is on his way to Antarctica for a six-month research stint. What happens to Emma in her trek is affected by that meeting as the two make a human connection.
