Plot Storyline
A woman of English extraction born in the German city of Ingelheim in the ninth century disguises herself as a man and rises through the Vatican ranks.
In the year 814 AD, Johanna is condemned to a life as a woman. Her path in life seems predetermined: work, have children and die young. But Johanna rebels against this. Against her strict father, against the rules of the church, for her convictions and her faith. Because she senses that her destiny is different, that God is showing her a different path. But the price is high. In Dorstadt, Johanna attends the cathedral school and meets Count Gerold, a nobleman at the bishop's court. Their friendship turns into love. When Gerold goes to war, Johanna remembers her destiny. However, she cannot achieve her goal as a woman. Johanna makes a momentous decision: under the name "Brother Johannes", she enters the Benedictine monastery in Fulda disguised as a man and lives there as a healer and respected doctor. When her true identity threatens to be revealed, she flees to Rome. There she meets Gerold again and realizes that she can no longer deny one thing: her love. Johanna climbs ever higher in the church hierarchy, the danger of discovery grows ever greater, and she feels ever more strongly that she must make a decision: Will she give her heart to God - or to a man? But she has no choice. When Pope Sergius dies, Johanna is elected his successor. However, her feelings for Gerold are stronger than her fear of being seen through. Johanna's enemies are just waiting for an opportunity to topple her from the throne.
