Reed Shepherd is a best-selling mystery author who struggles to incorporate romance into his novels. Ivy Roberts is a romance editor who goes over the draft for Reed's next book. When Reed gets her notes, he is upset by her criticism and confronts her. Ivy then leaves to go to her sister's beach wedding. Meanwhile, Reed goes to stay at his sister's place to write. Soon after, they are dismayed to find that their beach houses are right next to each other. Ivy's ex-boyfriend Zach, who is also in the wedding, sees them together. On a whim, Ivy and Reed pretend to be dating to make Zach mad. The two come up with an arrangement in which Reed will pretend to be Ivy's date, and in exchange, Ivy will help improve Reed's book. While discussing romance and participating in wedding activities, Ivy and Reed grow close. Eventually, they realize that even though their relationship is fake, their feelings for each other are becoming very real.
