It's the start of the Christmas season. Carley Kincaid is in a rut, she having made a list of New Year's resolutions at the beginning of the year, none on the list which she's made any attempt to work on. Top of the list is to quit her "boring" job, she working in quality control at Comfort Mills, a New York City based clothing company specializing in printed t-shirts. Part of her dislike was not only being passed over for the Director of Quality Control position despite being the most qualified, but that she was tasked with training the unqualified and unmotivated person who got the job, Wyatt Redmond, the son of company owner Silas Redmond, Wyatt who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and who knows he only got he job because Silas is trying to get him to focus on something. Carley also knows that her want to be a fashion designer is really a pipe dream, as while she has the ideas, she doesn't have the academic or work background and has only mediocre sewing skills. So Carley takes the opportunity to get fired when she sees it by taking the fall for a quality control problem on a regular client's order, the problem really caused by Wyatt not doing his job. Despite being one of his best employees, Silas has no choice but to fire her regardless of knowing that the problem really was Wyatt's fault. Silas also decides to cut off Wyatt financially, including having the household servants stop doing anything for him specifically (like cook his meals or make his morning coffee), until he can prove that he is a responsible adult by doing his job. While Carley and Wyatt have had a somewhat strained relationship for the year he's worked at Comfort Mills, she decides to make an arrangement with him, to which he ultimately agrees: he will help her fulfill her New Year's resolutions list by the end of the year so that she can prove to herself and her best friend Jamie that she is making strides in changing her life (she asking him in seeing that he takes risks in his personal life), she in turn to help him become a more responsible adult partly in showing him how to do things for himself. The primary question becomes if they can get over their animosity to help the other make these life altering changes.
