A rural baker and his wife dote their devoted daughter Bohdanka, who turns troublesome as she seems unable to get her parents' undivided attention. Angrily venturing into a dark wood, she stumbles upon a friendly witch, who explains they morn her seven brothers, who turned into ravens -except by night- after a thoughtless 'wish you disappeared' from the mother. Bohdanka vows to save them by he hard method the witch suggest: a vow of silence and producing for each of them by hand a shirt made from stingy nettles. It takes moths, lodging in a mountain cave. She's discovered by stutterer prince Bartolomej, whom queen-regnant Alexandra expects to leave the throne to his confident but dumb younger brother Norbert. But love for the even weirder outsider makes Bartolomej become a man to take her into the palace and claim his birthright, while the queen schemes to get rid of them, their only allies being the ravens, until the witch swings it, setting right an even darker secret from the queen's past.
