This year, Nell is looking forward to having her family visit over Christmas, but for various reasons they are forced to cancel, and suddenly Nell finds herself alone with all the Christmas activities she had planned. Somewhat hesitantly, she tries to convince herself that celebrating Christmas on her own might actually be a good thing. Her neighbor, Cooper, was supposed to go to Aspen for the holidays, but his boss asks him to stay behind and organize an important Christmas party for a major new client. Despite Nell's discomfort with talking to her neighbors, the two strike up a connection. Cooper, who has been used to being on his own since his youth, offers to encourage and support Nell as she faces spending Christmas by herself.
