In 2024, the deadliest virus mutant to date, COVID-23, turned Los Angeles into a ghost town and caused the democratic foundations of the USA to crumble. A strict and militarily monitored lock-down was imposed nationwide, from which only immune or recovered people are exempt. One of them is the bicycle courier Nico Price (KJ Apa), who delivers parcels to the better-off in society on behalf of the entrepreneur Lester (Craig Robinson). During the ongoing pandemic, Nico has started a digital love affair with Sara Garcia (Sofia Carson). When her infected grandmother Lita (Elpidia Carrillo) suddenly dies, Sara, who lives in the same household, is targeted by the corrupt and brutal hygiene authorities. Sara is threatened with being sent to a quarantine camp, which is like a death sentence. To save Sara, Nico tries to get her a fake immunity bracelet - with the help of Lester's regular customers William (Bradley Whitford) and Piper Griffin (Demi Moore). In the process, however, he falls into the trap of Emmett Harland (Peter Stormare), the head of the sanitation department, who is acting as a double agent. From then on, the murderous Harland devotes himself to a personal vendetta against the escaping Nico and Sara, who is soon arrested. Meanwhile, Piper Griffin separates from her unfaithful husband when William wants to rekindle an old affair with May (Alexandra Daddario), a singer celebrated on the Internet. The ex-record boss harasses May and becomes a danger to the singer. While May turns to her war-wounded fan Michael Dozer (Paul Walter Hauser) for protection from William, the Griffins' marital chaos sparks a chance for a new negotiation attempt by Nico for an immunity bracelet for Sara.
