Married couple Renee Baker and Aaron Thompson's lives took a detour when Renee's mother Maria Baker fell ill, they moving back to to Renee's hometown of Maplewood from New York City to care for her, Maria who eventually passed with Renee and Aaron moving into the family home. Five years later in the approach to Christmas, they are still in Maplewood running on autopilot not in their chosen fields in Renee not wanting to let go of Maria, and in her belief that at least her professional life will be taking a turn in the new year with her boss Jeff's long talked about retirement, he grooming her to take over the retail store. With a few setbacks to those beliefs, Renee, impromptu, decides to make a Christmas wish upon the bell given to her by the store's hired elf, Cici, that wish for a different life. Renee awakens, not fully understanding what is happening, to find that her wish has been granted, this new life in New York City her dream life in what she and Aaron arguably would have achieved if they didn't have to move back to Maplewood with one big exception: she and Aaron are not married, they, in this new life having broken up five years ago. With Cici only a bell ring away to answer any questions about what is happening, Renee discovers that she has to find out on her own the whys of the situation, including what happened between her and Aaron. Discovering that he could still be in her life, Renee goes on a quest to make it happen ultimately to be husband and wife once again. She will discover if she and Aaron are meant to be in this new life.
