Lucy Warriner tells her husband that she offered hospitality to her voice teacher when the man's car broke down unexpectedly, but Jerry thinks she is sleeping with the teacher. With both spouses suspecting infidelity, they agree to start divorce proceedings. They have a custody battle over their pet dog, but Lucy wins custody and Jerry is granted visiting rights to the dog Their divorce will be finalized within 90 days from the original legal decision. While separated, Lucy flirts with the Oklahoma-based oilman Dan Leeson and Jerry starts dating the singer Dixie Belle Lee. Feeling possessive over Lucy, Jerry undermines her relationship with Dan until the man breaks up with her. Shortly later, Jerry begins dating the high-profile heiress Barbara Vance. Posing as Jerry's sister, Lucy undermines the relationship by embarrassing Jerry and herself in front of Barbara's snobby family. Jerry then insists on driving Lucy home. Lucy sabotages their car and Jerry is mistaken for a drunk driver by local traffic cops. Escorted to a relative's cabin by the police, the estranged couple agree to spend the night in different bedrooms. Before midnight, they are finally able to admit that they are still in love with each other.
