Claire is a passionate midwife who finds complete fulfillment in her work on the maternity ward. The rest of her life is calm and orderly: she spends most of her free time alone in her allotment garden or with her son. But a series of upheavals is now calling this well-ordered life into question. The maternity ward is set to close, her son is considering dropping out of medical school, a new neighbor named Paul shows up at the allotment garden and persistently shows interest in her, and then Beatrice, her father's former lover, contacts her after several decades. Claire doesn't think much of Beatrice; she blames her for her father's suicide shortly after Beatrice's disappearance and therefore wants to spend as little time with her as possible. Beatrice, however, has a brain tumor and only a few months left to live, which she doesn't want to spend alone. With no friends or family, she turns to Claire in the hope of rekindling their past relationship. Reluctantly, Claire initially allows the closeness out of a sense of duty. From the clash of two very different personalities, an unexpected friendship emerges, forcing Claire to rethink her life plan.
