In a Cheyenne Reservation, Danielle "Dani" Moonstar is the only survivor of a tornado. She wakes up at a facility administrated by Dr. Cecilia Reyes, who explains to Dani that the place is intended to keep them safe and capable to control their powers. She is introduced to the amicable Rahne Sinclair; who is capable to turn into a wolf; to the obnoxious Illyana Rasputin, who is a killer capable of teletransportation; Sam Guthrie, who has high-speed; and Roberto da Costa, who is capable to overheat. However, the power of Dani has not been manifested yet. She learns that the facility is enclosed in a dome created by Dr. Reyes that they cannot cross. Out of the blue, the traumas of the youngsters are turned into dangerous nightmarish daydreams: Rahne with the abusive priest she killed; Illyana with the men that sexually abused her; Sam with the mine where he accidentally killed his father and other miners; and Roberto with his girlfriend he burned to death. Soon they learn what the real intention of Dr. Reyes and the Essex Corporation is and the power of Dani.
