During the Second World War, surgeon Julien Dandieu lives in the small French town of Montauban in the unoccupied zone and treats many wounded soldiers. This gives him a good life, but it is his wife Clara and his daughter Florence who make him happy. The love story of the unequal couple is told in flashbacks. Faced with the imminent occupation of the city by the Germans, he asks his friend Francois to drive his wife and daughter to his family home, a castle in the countryside. He believes his family will be safe there until the end of the war. But surprisingly, the German troops arrive there first. Julien, who has rushed there, witnesses the atrocities he is forced to watch in bewilderment and ends up fighting for his own life. The once peace-loving doctor now seeks revenge.
