Ever since her husband Shawn, her high school sweetheart, passed three years ago from an unexpected heart attack, Rebecca Greenway has focused all her attention on work as a UC Boulder History professor specializing in woman's role in the wild west, and on her best friends, their two sons, seventeen year old Noah and nine year old Ollie. Ollie and especially Noah believe their mother needs to get a life of her own as Noah is being pressured by her to attend UC Boulder, whereas he is thinking about following his girlfriend of four months Jasmine wherever the two of them decide they would like to attend. As Rebecca is awaiting word on whether she has been named to the open tenure position in the faculty, the family, including Rebecca's mother Maureen, and Rebecca's flighty younger sister Cassidy, are heading off on their annual vacation, this year to a ranch. There, for the first time since Shawn's passing, Rebecca is attracted to a man, retired champion rodeo rider turned horse whisperer Jake West. Thus she is therefore disappointed for herself when she learns that Jake is Cassidy's new boyfriend. Rebecca has to decide what to do not only factoring in Cassidy, but factoring in Jake who seems in turn to be attracted to her, and the fact of. their two very different lives.
