In the aftermath of the Second World War, Port and Kit Moresby arrive by ship in North Africa. Far from his North American homeland, Port is looking for inspiration and a way to save his marriage. Kit, who is rather tired of traveling, shares this hope. The couple are accompanied by the young George Tunner, who has his eye on Kit. In the foreign country, the couple only grow further apart; Port and Kit each lose themselves individually in boundless experiences of intoxication. Port gets involved with a prostitute, Kit has a brief affair with Tunner. Finally, the younger companion separates from the couple, who penetrate deeper into the Sahara.
