17th-century France: The young Gascon D'Artagnan travels to Paris to become a musketeer, a member of the royal guard. Immediately upon his arrival, he encounters a series of mishaps that lead the hot-blooded young man into three duels with three musketeers. But the duelists are interrupted by the Musketeers' arch-enemies, the members of Cardinal Richelieu's guard. A fierce battle erupts, and D'Artagnan naturally sides with the Musketeers. Thus begins the unbreakable friendship between Porthos, Athos, Aramis, and D'Artagnan. All of France knows that Cardinal Richelieu is up to no good; only King Louis XIII is oblivious. Richelieu wants to overthrow the monarch and seize power himself. To achieve his goal, he plots yet another scheme. This time, he intends to use the queen to incite Louis XIII and the Duke of Buckingham into another war between France and England. Richelieu receives active support from the former musketeer Rochefort, who has fallen from grace, and Milady de Winter, who uses her charms in both Paris and London to serve the cardinal. The queen recognizes the danger. Only a conciliatory letter to the Duke of Buckingham in London can defuse the situation. But who should deliver this letter to England? Who can still be trusted? One of Queen Anne's ladies-in-waiting, Constance de Bonacieux, has a solution: her lover D'Artagnan is brave, strong, and loyal to the king. He will surely deliver the letter to England and return with a reply within 14 days. D'Artagnan, of course, receives support from his friends, the Three Musketeers.
