Bitter, introspective 17-year-old Emanuel is a troubled girl whose mother died giving birth to her, and she feels guilty for this. She lives with her father Dennis and estranged stepmother Janice in a house in the suburbs. Emanuel has not gone to college and works in a drugstore with her colleague Arthur. She uses to flirt with teenage Claude on the train she uses to go to her job. When her next-door neighbor Linda asks her to be the babysitter of her newborn Chloe, Emanuel accepts, but doesn't see Chloe right away because she is sleeping.
