Plot Storyline
During the 1960s, a Caribbean sailor and his tomboy daughter search for buried treasure but run into unsavory characters and a cute lawyer who's after romance.
Tommy Tyler (Sir John Mills) and his eighteen-year-old daughter Spring (Hayley Mills) are all each other have in the world, with his wife/her mother long having died. They live aboard the "Sarah Tyler", the sailboat Tommy built thirty years ago for his wife, out of Catfish Key, and sail the Caribbean. Tommy is the type of person who would rather manipulate others to get what they need to survive on the seas than do any work, that manipulating which he seems to be able to do quite easily. Because of life on the seas and no mother figure, Spring has always been and still is a tomboy. She also has no idea of many of the western world's social conventions, especially when it comes to femininity. Into their lives enters blue blooded William Ashton (James MacArthur) of Philadelphia, he, a recent Princeton law school graduate. As he just passed the bar exam, Bill is vacationing with his Uncle Charles Skelton (David Tomlinson) aboard his yacht before he heads back to Philadelphia to start work. Because Bill wants more outdoor adventure on his vacation than his uncle is able to provide, Tommy invites him to sail with them for a few weeks, an invitation which Bill accepts. Tommy has ulterior motives in that as Spring has become a woman without her even knowing it, he wants her to experience womanly things, like the flush of romance, which he believes will happen between her and Bill if they only spend time together. Beyond the question of whether something will happen between Spring and Bill, and if it does, if there is a future for them, they get thrown into an adventure of another kind as Tommy is in possession of a map pointing to a sunken ship with a reported stash of two hundred fifty thousand dollars worth of gold. However, Tommy doesn't have the means to retrieve the gold. Another problem is that cutthroat Jose Carkez (Lionel Jeffries) and his right hand thug Judd Sellers (Harry Andrews) know that Tommy has the map, they will do anything to get their hands on it, and they do have the means to retrieve the sunken treasure. Although initially wanting to use Bill as a lawyer in the matter, Tommy figures the best way to get what he wants is to negotiate with Carkez, with Bill a reliable witness to prevent Carkez and Sellers from killing him for it. Thrown into the mix is Cleary (Niall MacGinnis), Carkez's partner, who is more an enemy who is better to have close at hand. Tommy may have further protection in pitting Cleary and Carkez against each other, that a risky maneuver as Cleary is even more willing to kill to get what he wants than Carkez.
