Casey Carter and Henry McMillan, an executive employment recruiter and a corporate farm manager, respectively, meet when, in their own social circles, they are each having their birthday celebration at the same restaurant. There is an immediate attraction between them despite being different personalities: she always wants to be out there trying new things in not having a clear direction for what she wants to do and doesn't like to ask for help, while he doesn't like to be the center of attention, has always known what he wants, and is cooperative in things he does. Out of circumstance, they end up sharing one birthday cake and thus blowing out the candles together. After the fact, Casey is the first to realize that, for whatever the reason the fates have for them, she receives his birthday wish of inheriting a small farm, and he receives her birthday wish of being chosen to be a contestant on a nationally televised dance competition reality show, each wish received outside of his/her comfort zone. As such, she is able to convince him to cooperate in each other's wish, they being on the dance show together despite he having two left feet, and he managing the farm and having a financial stake in it. She has to up the ante continually when he discovers that the dance show was not the only item on her wish list, it being a three-parter. The final wish, which she refuses to divulge and which she assures him does not include him, may be what the fates have in mind for them.
