A train in Denmark, carrying $1 billion dollars in gold bars, has to slow for a stalled vehicle on the tracks. It is actually part of a clever ploy to allow a band of gunmen to climb aboard the slow-moving train and overpower the armed guard accompanying the gold. The mastermind behind the magnum heist is Count Massimo Contini. The loss of this much gold will destabilize both the British and U.S. economies. Before word of this potential financial crisis can leak out, Matt Helm is called with the hopes that he can recover it within 48 hours. The authorities have little information to go on, so they intentionally leak Matt cover story hoping that it will draw out some leads. Their hope resides mainly in Lola Medina, a former playmate of the count. She asks Matt to her apartment where she makes a deal to exchange information for a $1 million payoff. She confirms that the culprit is Contini as she heard him discussing Operation Rainbow before they split up. Matt is assisted by a Danish Tourist Bureau representative, Freya Carlson, who is really a British agent in disguise. She has an annoying habit of interrupting Matt's advances on an important woman in the count's court. One is his current fiancee, Linka Karenski. Another is his chief Hong Kong agent, Wen Yu-Rang. A crucial assault on the count's chateau is possible because of a mini helicopter that is stored in his vehicle's trunk. Three large bags contain an easy to assemble craft that can carry two passengers.
