Anja Grimm has a sixth sense. She reads the forest like nobody else. The young woman is in her late 20s and is doing an internship at the Neustadt forestry office in the Upper Palatinate in the late 90s. But the forestry student from Munich seems to have been drawn to the remote area for more than just professional reasons. The inhabitants of the community whose fields and forests Anja is supposed to map suspect, suspect and fear this. And Anja herself? She finds the villagers' behavior towards her strange from the start, and increasingly hostile. In fact, the young woman has a connection with the remote community: when Anja was a child, she spent a vacation in the area with her parents. Her father disappeared into the forest and never reappeared. Anja and her mother never got over the sudden loss of her father. When a murder finally takes place and the perpetrator commits suicide, Anja finds herself on the trail of a terrible secret. The trail leads back to the village's past, to a time long before her father's disappearance: the final months of the Second World War. Anja's life is put in danger when she confronts the oppressive silence of her parents and grandparents with her search for the truth.
