Victor Bukowski, a hack London actor, believes that the biggest mistake he made in his life was letting his girlfriend of six years, psychologist Sylvia Weld, get away. It's been eight months since he cheated on her with Carol, a castmate with whom he was rehearsing a play, and admitted his infidelity to Sylvia in believing that he had been in love with Carol at the time; this led Sylvia to break up with him. On this day, the eve of Sylvia's wedding to agricultural engineer Dave Summers, Victor seizes the opportunity to be sent back in time to the day he admitted his infidelity to Sylvia. In this second time around, Victor knows that he not only has to hide his infidelity from Sylvia, but also prevent Sylvia from ever meeting Dave. What Victor does not foresee in maintaining that relationship with Sylvia is meeting someone else who may enter his heart.
