Because of a sudden ice drift, young Sergey and his faithful old dog Rex turn up on different ice floes, and Rex rushes into the water after Sergey and helps the ice-floe get to shore. Rex is dragged out of the water too slowly, suffers pneumonia, and dies in the hospital. The boy's parents ask the veterinarian, Valerian Valeryanych, not to tell Sergey about Rex's death. His father intends to break the news, but he keeps putting it off, as Rex meant too much to Sergey.
