Is the human-ape hybrid the stuff of Science Fiction or a being that could walk the Earth? In 2021, news broke that scientists had grown human stem cells in a monkey embryo. Is this a breakthrough that promises benefits to humanity? Or is it an unethical step towards a human-monkey life-form? Researchers have pushed against these boundaries before. A hundred years ago, a Russian scientist was hell-bent on creating a human-chimpanzee hybrid. More recently, rumors swirled of similar experiments in the United States and the report that it led to a live birth. Is this mad science? Or could creating hybrids now help us defeat disease?
