Beverly of Graustark

Beverly Calhoun of New Jersey accompanies her cousin Oscar, who is the heir to the throne of the small (fictitious) country of Graustark. On the way, Oscar is waylaid in a skiing accident, and Beverly must go on in his place. After being rescued from an ambush by a goatherd named Dantan, she assigns him to be her bodyguard. There are many awkward complications due to Beverly needing to conceal her gender, while also wanting to court Dantan as a woman, and fend off the villainous men and women of the court. Finally the real Prince Oscar arrives, and things are sorted out.
