Plot
Storyline
This film tells the tale of Hungary's flip from frozen East to Wild West, where gunfights and gangland killings suddenly became commonplace.
This film investigates a subject that no one has looked at since the regime change in Hungary. A serious and all-encompassing documentary film has never been made about the underworld figures of the 1990s or about their power disputes and system of corruption, or those who benefitted from its profits. Trail of Blood shows the workings of this seedy underworld and the way in which Hungary was divided up between various criminal gangs and Budapest-based nightclub owners. Szabolcs Kisberk's film looks at a series of unresolved crimes from the 1990s that included oil scams and gangland murders. The film sheds light on the links between the underworld and the secret service and the network that included criminal bosses and figures high up in the secret service and national politics. The film includes interviews with two former heads of the Serious Crime Department, Peter Doszpot and Ferenc Chilko, as well as the mother of Tamas Portik's girlfriend and Peter Tasnadi. The film also features rare archive footage and dramatic reconstructions.
