For a long time, Corsica was an island of misery, where malaria infested the coasts and vendettas plagued the mountains. It wasn't until 1943 that Corsica, the first French territory to be liberated, emerged from its isolation. The American military transformed the island into a giant aircraft carrier, cleaned up the coastline and introduced the local population to the first benefits of modernity. Corsica became a dream destination for holidaymakers from the mainland. But the rush for blue gold was hijacked by political clans: concrete development, pollution, corruption. The Corsican people revolted, the most radical took up arms, and the plundering of the island was halted. But the inevitable continues.
