Plot:
El Retorno (2025) is a Spanish psychological thriller directed by Fernando M. Larrea. The story follows Silvia, a single mother who lives with her young daughter Laura in a quiet house on the outskirts of the city. What begins as a seemingly normal life is soon disrupted by a series of disturbing and unexplained events. Lights flicker without cause, objects shift places mysteriously, and unsettling sounds echo through the empty rooms. A chessboard becomes a focal point, as pieces begin to move on their own, suggesting the presence of something - or someone - unseen. As the tension builds, Silvia becomes increasingly anxious and isolated, unsure of whether she is losing her grip on reality or if a malevolent force has entered her home. Her relationship with her daughter is tested as both begin to experience the strange phenomena. Haunted by her past and overwhelmed by her present, Silvia must confront what is real and what is imagined in order to protect herself and Laura. El Retorno explores themes of motherhood, trauma, perception, and the blurred boundaries between the psychological and the supernatural. With atmospheric cinematography, a haunting original score, and a narrative that keeps viewers questioning every moment, the film delivers a suspenseful and emotionally charged experience. Co-directed by Rut Domene, who also served as the film's director of photography and art director, the film is anchored by a powerful performance from Ana Navasquillo. The result is a deeply immersive thriller that lingers long after the final scene.
