Because of who they are and where they're located, the students at Ocean Crest College in Southern California have relations with the opposite sex, the beach, and surfing primarily on their minds. One who thinks more about academics is beautiful Sandy Palmer as she realizes that her uncles, Sid Hoyt and Woody Woodbury, have worked solely in the goal of sending her to college. Sid and Woody have a musical act which they perform at a dive called the Silver Palms, where they don't want Sandy ever to visit in its seedy nature, including featuring an exotic dancer named Topaz McQueen. Their support for Sandy is at risk when their act doesn't seem to impress the clientele, they on the brink of getting fired. Woody is able to morph the act into one impressing the college crowd, the club also morphing into a college hangout, Surf's Up. Wealthy Ding Pruitt, who has never had to work a day in his life and actually has a "servant" in the form of a beatnik named Kelp, can have any girl on campus he wants, but only has eyes for Sandy. Beyond wanting to focus on her schoolwork, she, in return, fends off his advances in believing that he only has sex on his mind, and not true feelings, and has a sense of privilege in getting whatever he wants. Regardless, Ding's grandfather, B.S. Cronin, doesn't trust anyone of Sandy's social status in believing she a gold-digger only after the family money. He does whatever he can to get Sandy out of Ding's life, he focusing his attack on Woody and Surf's Up by using his position of owning most of the College. Things are only complicated as Woody is attracted to Cronin's operative, Sociology Professor Pauline Swensen, who, unlike Cronin, solely has the students' welfare at heart.
