Plot Storyline
About the daughter of the couple who ran the Hotel de la Gare de Courgenay, in the Canton of Jura. In 1915, the composer Hanns In der Gand was staying in the region and in 1917 he composed La Petite Gilberte, immortalizing the young girl's empathy with the soldiers.
The simple, straightforward story of "Gilberte de Courgenay" centers on a company of soldiers, a Jura village and an unforgettable innkeeper's daughter. The company from German-speaking Switzerland arrives in the small French-speaking town of Courgenay during the First World War. Soldiers and officers soon fall for the charms of the pretty and helpful Gilberte (Anne-Marie Blanc). Nevertheless, many are disappointed and outraged by the news that the soldiers will have to spend Christmas in Courgenay. The gunner Peter Hasler (Erwin Kohlund) is particularly sad. He has fallen in love with Tilly (Ditta Oesch), the daughter of his godfather (Heinrich Gretler), writes her letters every week and never receives a reply. Peter is unaware that his letters are being misappropriated by Tilly's father, who disapproves of this improper relationship. Gilberte tries to comfort Peter and cheer him up. A tender love story develops between the two. When Tilly learns of her father's machinations, she leaves home and travels to Courgenay. Desperate, she discovers the relationship between Gilberte and Peter. But the magnanimous Gilberte renounces her love and brings the two back together.
