Storyline
An American lawyer's wife is reunited with her child and his father.
In Leicestershire, Belinda Warren and Bob Melford, the son of Edward, Lord Farrington, have fallen in love, the issue being that Bob is already married, to Rosamond Melford. He will not leave her arguably because she is an invalid. No longer able to turn to her bedrock, her Naples residing father in he having just passed away, in figuring out what to do, Belinda is somewhat relieved when friend, writer Tubbs Barrow, who is also friends with Lord Farrington, Bob, and Rosamond, discovers that she and Bob are not only having an affair, but that she is pregnant with Bob's child. Although somewhat self-serving, Lord Farrington, who Tubbs takes into his confidence, comes up with what he truly believes is the best for all concerned: that Belinda have the child and give it to him for Bob and Rosamond in Rosamond unable to have children in her physical condition, Rosamond and Bob to be made aware of the biological origins of child (although Rosamond not to know who the mother is), and Belinda to go away forever. En route to New York City after having the child, Belinda meets American accountant Jim Baker, who falls in love with her at first sight, the two eventually marrying. Two years later, things come to a head. While still loving her, Jim can see that something is troubling Belinda that is keeping them from having a truly fulfilling marriage. So when Jim tells her that he has to go to England for a business trip and asks her to accompany him, she has to decide if she will make the effort to revisit the past she never knew, namely discover first hand the state of her and Bob's son. Tubbs, who is able to track Belinda down in New York City, has his own ideas of what is best for her mental state..
