Battle Cries

Emma, a musician, and her boyfriend Simon have just found out they're expecting a child. However, during routine checkups, Emma is diagnosed with breast cancer. Her doctor advises her to terminate the pregnancy, as chemotherapy and radiation therapy are incompatible with pregnancy. For Emma, this news is devastating; termination is unthinkable. She refuses to accept that her own life must be pitted against that of her child. So Simon suggests she seek a second opinion. A specialist presents another option: a relatively untested treatment method that would allow Emma to continue her pregnancy, but one with an uncertain outcome. As chemotherapy begins, Emma is repeatedly confronted with difficult medical decisions, physical changes, and the self-doubt that comes with them. Simon stays by her side and tries to support her, but in doing so, he reaches his own limits. The entire process becomes a grueling ordeal.
