Storyline
A chorus girl falls in love with a wealthy young man, but their relationship is jeopardized by her mother's fears about the reaction of his family.
Mother and daughter Mae Martin and Peggy Martin are among the eight chorus girls in a second rate New York burlesque show headlined by Bubbles LaRue. While encouraging, Mae is protective of Peggy, such as shielding her from Bubbles' attempts to set her up on dates with adoring audience members, more often than not who end up being married sugar daddies. On the encouraging side, Mae, who, when Bubbles unexpectedly quits just before a show, is given the headline spot in once being a headliner herself, gives it to Peggy instead. Being in the front, Peggy begins getting the attention that was once reserved for Bubbles, including that from out of town (Cleveland) society boy Randy Carroll. So when Peggy and Randy eventually start dating and fall in love, and Randy subsequently asks Peggy to marry him only with Mae's blessing, Mae, who can see that Randy is a nice and honorable young man, nonetheless objects in having gone through the same thing with Peggy's biological father, Alan Wakely, whose high society Boston family had the marriage annulled upon learning that Mae was a burlesque queen. Mae eventually allows the marriage to go ahead upon Peggy and Mae meeting Randy's society mother and Randy telling her the truth about their work meaning her approval as well in knowing the complete truth. Things get complicated when Randy only fulfills part of this request.
