Storyline
The past and the present coexist in a place spoiled by modern industry but which long ago hosted the Eleusinian Mysteries, the secret ceremonies that initiated the ancient Greeks into the miracles of life, death and the afterlife.
Only twenty kilometres west of Athens lies the small industrial city of Eleusis. But in ancient Greece, Eleusis was the home of the Eleusinian Mysteries and Demeter--one of the original Twelve Olympians and the goddess the harvest, grain, and fertility--and her daughter, Persephone. Nowadays, Eleusis hosts some of Greece's major industries; however, not without grave environmental consequences. Spanning one long, eventful decade, from 1988 to 1998, the "Mourning Rock" documents the passing of time and the transformation of a once-sacred city that is in stark contrast to its former glory.
