Plot Storyline

A man and his wife decide that they can afford to have a house in the country built to their specifications. It's a lot more trouble than they think.

In Manhattan, middle-class Jim Blandings lives with his wife Muriel and two teenage daughters in a four-bedroom, one-bathroom leased apartment. Jim works in an advertising agency raising $15,000 a year and feels uncomfortable in his cramped apartment. When he sees an advertisement for a huge house for sale in Connecticut for an affordable price, he drives with his wife and the real-estate agent and decides to buy the old house with no technical advice. Family-friend lawyer Bill Cole sends an acquaintance engineer to inspect the house; he advises that he should just build another one. Jim checks the information with other engineers and all of them condemn the place: instead of a dream house, he has bought a "money pit."
