Storyline
The former employee of a trucking company, currently in prison for embezzlement, plans his eventual revenge against his former boss.
In 1940, the owner of a lucrative freight company in San Francisco, Catholic John Torno, turned to God to ask for the safe return of his younger brother, Father Jess Torno, whom he raised, from overseas in his duty as a military chaplain. His prayers are answered, but just as Jess is scheduled to be sent to his own parish in Northern California, he is found shot in his hotel room, his dying words to John being that the answer is in the hotel-room Bible. John doesn't divulge this information to the police as he intends to find Jess' murderer himself in an eye-for-an-eye. John's first thought is that the killer is Nick Cherney, the company's former accountant who was just released from prison for embezzling from the company, John's testimony which was key to the conviction. However, John learns that Nick was released the day after Jess' murder. By the time John goes to retrieve the Bible from the hotel room, he finds that it is gone. Able to get a list of the names of the people who occupied that hotel room since Jess' murder, John goes on a quest to find those people to see if any of them took the Bible. He ends up hiring unemployed showgirl Carla North, one of the hotel-room occupants, to help him. She doesn't know why John asked her to find this list of people, and ends up trying to be his voice of reason when she discovers his mission.
