A history of the U.S. Army's First Infantry Division, known as "The Fighting First" and also as "The Big Red One" for the soldiers' distinctive shoulder patch.
A history of the U.S. Army's First Infantry Division, focusing on its service in the European Theater of Operations in the Second World War. The 1st participated in 8 campaigns and 3 amphibious landings during WW2. The 1st was in North Africa, in Sicily, and on Omaha Beach during D-Day. It drove across France and into Belgium, and fought in Hurtgen Forest and in the Battle of the Bulge. Crossing the Rhine at the Remagen bridge, it pushed through Germany into Czechoslovakia at the war's end. After hostilities ceased, members of the First Infantry Division served as occupation troops in the former Nazi Germany.
