As Bodas de Deus is a philosophical and ironic drama centered on the recurring Monteiro alter ego Joao de Deus, played by the director himself. Joao de Deus is an erudite, enigmatic, and socially marginal figure who moves between poverty and the refined world of Lisbon's bourgeois elite. Through a series of encounters-particularly with wealthy, cultured women-Joao de Deus engages in long, intellectual conversations that blend theology, morality, desire, money, and power. He survives through charm, manipulation, and wit, while openly challenging social conventions, religious dogma, and bourgeois hypocrisy.
