Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets

A disillusioned young man living in a chaotic working-class family in Tokyo. Frustrated by his dysfunctional home and by a conformist, consumerist society, he wanders through the city encountering marginalized people and scenes of youth rebellion. Mixing fiction, music, documentary street footage, and surreal imagery, the film portrays the anger, confusion, and revolutionary spirit of Japanese youth in the early 1970s. The protagonist ultimately breaks the boundary between film and audience, questioning cinema itself and calling for action in the real world rather than passive observation.
